Surgical Technology A.A.S
The purpose of this Program is to provide the health care community with graduates who are competent, caring, and ready to enter the profession of surgical technology, and be an integral member of the total health care team. The total program consists of a plan to prepare the potential technologist in a nine month Certificate of Proficiency or a 21 month Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree. A balanced curriculum of general didactic and practicum courses offers the student a rich environment in which to learn both the art and science of surgical technology. Practicum sites include major hospitals, affiliates and clinics. Practicum courses are actual "hands on" experiences at one of six area hospitals/surgicenters. The student spends 704 hours at the practicum education site during the two-semester program and has every opportunity to learn his or her chosen profession. Most surgical technology students have a job offer before graduation. But definitely within three months of graduating with an A.A.S. degree or Certificate of Proficiency, 100% of our graduates are employed or are pursuing further education. As a Surgical Technology student, job tasks include: - Performing a competent surgical scrub
- Gowning and gloving self and other health team members
- Understanding surgical procedure being performed
- Handling instruments, supplies and equipment properly and safely
- Directing patient interaction
- Basic clerical skills
- Physician interaction
- Traveling to clinical sites
- A personal commitment
- Professionalism

**This is a suggested degree plan and students are strongly encouraged to seek advisement for course planning from their academic advisor or faculty advisor. Since senior college requirements differ, Tyler Junior College recommends that all students who plan to transfer check with their senior college regarding transferability of particular classes into degree requirements. The final responsibility for the selection, scheduling, and satisfactory completion of degree or certificate requirements rests with the student.**
