Greeting to the Student:
I’m glad you’re here. Mine won’t be the easiest class you will ever take, but most of my students end the semester exclaiming, “I really learned something!” I am always eager to help students study-or learn to study. Take advantage of the unique environment here at TJC, with instructors who will take time to meet with their students and encourage their learning. Some general advice, for my classes:

  1. Come to class.
  2. Ask questions!
  3. Take notes and study them
  4. Keep up with the textbook readings.
  5. Turn in your assignments on time.

Teaching Philosophy:
I consider it the highest privilege that I have the opportunity to teach college students about the history of our country. This is a second career for me, and therefore, is one I cam to out of passion for the subject, not prestige for financial reward. I believe the real key to our nation’s future sits in front of me every day. My job is to convince these important people why this is a unique country, worthy of their protection, preservation and improvement. I believe the most important people in our nation’s history are those whose names we will never know, and that memorizing specific dates is usually less important that understanding an era. I believe that it is just as important to understand the “why” of an event, as the “who”, “what”, “where” and “when.” And I believe that most people are convinced they hate history because they’ve been forced to memorize unconnected facts about a lot of people they never knew, who died a long time ago. Finally, I believe the multiple choice question sounds the death knell of American public education.

Method of Evaluation of Students:
I usually give 3-4 tests per semester, consisting of fill-in-the-blank, short answer and essay questions. I also assign a biography to read with a 2-page book review. These 4-5 grades, plus the final exam, are required grades. Usually I offer 2-3 extra credit assignments during the semester, for students who wish to improve their average. Extra credit questions are also available on all my tests.
