Apache Orientation - Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Important to Attend Orientation?
Yes, freshmen at TJC are required to attend Orientation to plan the first semester and beyond.
Why? Because Orientation helps you plan for success, balance your schedule and learn about extracurricular activities, college life, TJC expectations, traditions and transfer opportunities.

Who Should Attend Orientation?
Anyone who is applying to attend Tyler Junior College may attend Orientation, but it is designed for recent high school graduates, transfer students with fewer than 15 college credit hours and individuals who have never attended college.

NOTE: Due to limited enrollment, students are encouraged to attend the earliest session possible. Acceptance to any session is on a space-available basis and is limited to those who have completed all pre-Orientation requirements. Enrollment in each session is capped to provide the best experience for all.

Can I Just Show Up to Orientation?
No. You must apply to attend TJC, submit test scores and either your GED scores or a high school transcript, register for Orientation, and pay your Orientation fee to be accepted for any session. You will be notified of the session to which you have been assigned.

Do I have to Attend Both Days?
Yes. In order for your Fall class schedule to remain intact (not be dropped) and to receive a passing grade for Orientation, you must attend all sessions.

Why Do I Have to Pay an Orientation Fee?
Your Orientation fee covers the cost of informational materials and handouts, lodging, food, postage, mailings and other administrative costs. It does not cover tuition and fees for the associated Psychology 1100 course for which you will receive an hour of credit. Payment for PSYCH 1100 is due with your payment of tuition and fees for the Fall semester. Tuition and fees must be paid by the payment deadline for Fall 2006 (see the Web site at www.tjc.edu). There are no refunds available for Orientation.

What If I Cannot Attend at the Times Offered?
If the deadline for the summer Orientation session you wanted to attend has passed, contact the Admissions office at 903-510-2523 to talk about other options. Some form of Orientation will be required of your first term at TJC if you have fewer than 15 college credit hours earned.

What Will I Do at Orientation?
Summer Orientation sessions are intended to be fun, so theyre planned that way. Youll meet new friends, play games, win prizes, learn TJC traditions and explore opportunities. Youll also discover resources to help you as a student, visit with an academic advisor, gain an understanding of the TJC expectations of a college student and register for your first semester.

How Will I Be Notified of the Session I am In?
Before you are registered for summer Orientation, we must receive:
1)  your application for admission to TJC,
2)  high school transcript (or GED scores) and documentation of proper testing requirements
(see preceding section),
3)  your Apache Orientation application, and
4)  the $50 fee.
Once you are registered, you will receive a confirmation via postcard or e-mail, notifying you of the session to which you have been assigned. Register early to get your first-choice session.

May I Stay Overnight in a Residence Hall?
If needed, on-campus housing is provided for the first evening of Orientation. You will need to bring your own linens, towels, toiletries, shower curtain, toilet tissue, alarm clock, etc., for the overnight stay. Note: Your overnight stay for Orientation is not related to any application for residence hall living for the coming school year. If youre interested in living on campus, contact the Residential Life & Housing office for application information at 9035102345.

If parents are staying in town overnight, they can either stay at a nearby hotel (listed below) or on campus in a residence hall.  Parents interested in staying on campus ($25 per two-twin-bed room), must contact the Residential Life & Housing office at 9035102345 to reserve a room. Parents housing must be paid separately and directly to the housing office. Due to limited residence hall space, parents wishing to stay overnight on campus must see to it that their students Orientation registration is completed in a most timely manner.

When calling these hotels, mention that you are staying for TJC Apache Orientation to receive a discounted.

Should Parents Attend Orientation?

Parents are welcome to attend all Orientation events except the Day One evening dinner and mixer event. Parents also can stay on campus overnight to experience living on campus. The two-bed residence hall room fee is $25; same personal items required of parent(s) as student.

How Will I Register for Classes If I Dont Attend Summer Orientation?
First-time students not attending a summer Orientation session will:
1) complete an application for admission, including an official high school transcript (or GED scores); 2) complete all testing requirements; and 3) visit with an academic advisor prior to registering for classes. Freshmen with fewer than 15 college credit hours will be required to enroll in a 5-week Orientation class (PSYC 1100).

What If I Want to Use a Scholarship or Financial Aid to Pay?
Students who wish to use financial aid or scholarship funds should contact either the Financial Aid office at 903-510-2385 or the Scholarships office at 903-510-2386. Only students with completed financial aid files will be allowed to use financial aid funds to pay tuition and fees during registration. Scholarship recipients must furnish a confirmation letter verifying the scholarship they have received. Scholarship or financial aid funds may NOT be used to pay the $50 Orientation fee.

When Are Fall 2007 Tuition Fees Due?
Your payment for tuition and fees for Fall classes must be paid by the tuition and fees deadline. See the Web site for details (www.tjc.edu). Bills not paid by that time will lead to a cancelled schedule. If your schedule is cancelled, you will need to register during Late Registration, meaning the schedule of classes you hoped to take as a result of Orientation registration no longer exists. You will also be subject to a Late Registration fee.

What If I Have Special Accommodations Needs?
If you need to arrange special accommodations in accordance with Section 504/ADA, contact Support Services at (903) 510-2395 by the registration deadline for the session you plan to attend.
