Medical Transcription Placement Policies

Placement/Admission/Acceptance Policies For The Medical Transcription Certificate Program

Although Tyler Junior College has an open door policy, specific programs in the College have selected admissions.  The Medical Transcription Certificate Program has selected admission because there are more students willing to enroll in the program than the program can accommodate.  Meeting criteria for selection does not guarantee admission to the program.  Final selection will be based on the applicant pool and space available.

The number of students admitted each year is limited due to factors such as classroom, laboratory and clinical space, regulating agency requirements, and student-teacher ratios. Programs in the school of health sciences utilize a point system for placement. Points are awarded for the criteria established for each program. The admissions committee considers ranking of the students according to points received and other factors as listed above.

An applicant to the Medical Transcription Certificate:

  1. Must have graduated from high school or have passed the General Education                 Development (GED) test.
  2. Must complete an admissions application to Tyler Junior College (if not currently a student).
  3. Must complete a Tyler Junior College Health Science Programs Admission Application.
  4. Must submit official college transcripts from all colleges attended including TJC to the Department Chair’s office with the application.
  5. Must submit official placement test results with the application. (ACCUPLACER Reading and English only, or THEA if taken.  (This is a THEA-exempt program and THEA is not required.).  If you are TSI-Complete and do not wish to test, your will receive a 90% value as your test scores for both Reading and English.
  6. Be eligible for readmission to college(s) previously attended.
  7. Be eligible for readmission to health science program (s) previously attended.

For the applicant selected for tentative placement into the Medical Transcription Certificate Program, the following will occur:

The applicant will receive a letter of notification from the Dean of Admissions on/or before the third week in July.   The applicant must submit to the Department Chair, within 2 weeks of the date of the letter from the Dean of Admissions, a written acceptance of placement.

All accepted students must maintain a "C" (76%) or better in all required MRMT courses, and a “C” or better in other curriculum courses.   Reapplication to the program each year will require all new application forms and transcripts. Students dismissed from the program who wish to reapply must make an appointment with the department chair. Re-admittance will be reviewed by The Admission Committee.

Again, every effort is made to assure accuracy of the information on this website, but be aware that stipulations set forth are subject to change.
