James F. Gatewood Top Ten Scholarship

With a $60,000 gift from the Gatewood-Hawkins Foundation, Virginia Louise Gatewood has endowed two Top Ten Scholarships in memory of her late husband, James F. Gatewood.

During his life, James generously supported various educational initiatives at Tyler Junior College including its horticulture programs and its developing Botanical Gardens. His scholarship will provide funding for students who graduate in the top ten of their high school classes within the TJC service area. Priority consideration will be given to students interested in pursuing a career in horticulture.

James was a Tyler resident, a retired Land man, active community volunteer and an advocate for education. He believed that we, as the community, should help others help themselves and that education was the key to success.
