Financial Aid - Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
All students receiving financial aid funds at Tyler Junior College must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. TJC has a one strike policy which gives the student a second chance after failing to meet the SAP standards for the first time. Satisfactory academic progress is defined below. All enrolled students must: -
Successfully complete 67% of attempted* hours for each term. Successful completion of a course requires a grade of "A", "B", "C", or "D". Renewal TEXAS Grant recipients and TEOG renewal recipients must complete 75% of their enrolled hours.
*Attempted hours = Hours enrolled in as of official report date for which financial aid funding was determined. -
Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on all course work that is recorded on Tyler Junior College transcript. Renewal TEXAS Grant recipients and TEOG renewal recipients must maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Financial aid awards are given for a full academic year provided satisfactory academic progress is met prior to receiving aid for each semester. Satisfactory academic progress will be evaluated after each semester, before financial aid is paid. For the following semester. Students will be categorized as being in “good standing” or placed on “suspension” for financial aid purposes as defined below. As a result, financial aid funds will or will not pay according to financial aid SAP status. Financial Aid SAP Status
-
The financial aid for students who fail to meet the SAP criteria for the first time will be sent a warning letter but financial aid will not be suspended. TEXAS Grant and TEOG renewal awards cannot be appealed. (This is the “first strike” and can be used for the following semester.) -
The financial aid for students who fail to meet the SAP after the “first strike” will be suspended indefinitely or until hour requirement and/or cumulative grade point average deficit is made up. Suspended students will be denied ALL financial aid funding and will be notified of suspension by mail. If financial aid funds have already paid for the following semester, these funds will be removed from the account once the suspension has been set. Suspended students must make up SAP deficits PRIOR to the begin date of the semester funded. Summer terms may be used to make up deficits but grant funding cannot be received. Students whose actions appear to abuse the intended purpose of federal, state and local financial aid may be suspended and/or required to see the Director of Financial Aid.
