Financial Aid - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What do I complete for grants and loans?
Answer: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You fill out the application using your prior year's tax information.  The response can take from 2-6 weeks. You will receive a Student Aid Report from the Department of Education and a letter from TJC.  For more information on filing the FAFSA.

2. What do I do with this Student Aid Report (SAR)?
Answer: First, check to see if the SAR has been calculated.  Find your EFC on the letter (first page) of the SAR.   If there is a number by "EFC" the SAR has been processed.  Next, check the college listing to see if TJC is listed on your application.  Finally, you need to check each question on the application to see if there are any corrections that you need to make.  If there are, you must correct the information, sign, and mail the SAR to the address listed.

  • If there is no EFC number, the SAR needs corrections. (Which you can do electronically)
  • If our school is not listed on the SAR, contact the Department of Education at (800) 433-3243 and have TJC added to the list.

3. What do I do with the letter I received from the Financial Aid Office?
Answer: Refer to Apache Access and follow the instructions on your letter. During this process you may be required to download certain documents to TURN INTO the Financial Aid Office.

4. When is the best time to apply for scholarships?
Answer: The priority deadline to complete the FAFSA for the Fall Semester is April 1st.  For the Spring Semester the priority date is October 1st.

5. When can I get my grant or loan check?
Answer: Grant remainder amount checks are not released until 30 to 40 days after the first day of class. If it is past the 30 to 40 day mark, then it should be the next printing day (call 903-510-2385 for the print days).  Loans take approximately 3 - 4 weeks to arrive.  You must have your promissory note to the lender before we can receive the funds.  You can also contact your lender to get a disbursement date.   (Please note: the disbursement date is not the date you will get your check.   It takes a few days to be posted to your account and then a check will be released on the next printing day.)

6. What is your School Code?
Answer: Tyler Junior College's School Code is 003648.

7. How long is it going to take?
Answer: All times are tentative and assuming everything is correct and/or complete.

  • If you are sending in a FAFSA: 2 - 6 weeks till you get your SAR.
  • If you have made corrections on your SAR: 10 days to 2 weeks until we receive corrections back.
  • If you have just turned in forms: 2 to 6 weeks to be reviewed then an award letter sent out.
  • If you turn in a loan application: Normally takes 3 weeks for the funds to come from the lender. (The first week of classes is usually the first loan disbursement date)

8. What do I do with the promissory note?
Answer: The promissory note is basically your loan application with the lender.  The promissory note should be mailed to the bank that you have chosen as your lender or electronically signed on Loans by Web to your lender.  If you receive the promissory note in the mail, usually it will include a mailing address for your lender.  If not, please contact Texas Guaranteed at (800) 845-6267.
