Costa Rica Project
May 10-19, 2009 Tyler Junior College has an opportunity to impact the lives of more than just a few Costa Ricans and at the same time achieve the strategic goals of the college by enriching the lives of students through community service on a global scale. Dr. Mike Metke, TJC President, Foreign Language Department has identified a project in northern Costa Rica, en Las Lilas. The project team will refurbish and equip the library of an elementary school . The first 2 days of the trip will be dedicated to this project in Las Lilas. Dr. Metke who made a discovery trip over Thanksgiving break met with community leaders of Las Lilas and began preparations for the TJC Costa Rican project team. Working with the various department chairs, three courses have been designed to prepare students and enhance the travel opportunity, although they are not required. - Dr. Betsy Ott will teach Biology 2389, Special Topics, “BioGeography of the Neotropics”,
- Robert Brooks will teach Geography 1303 which includes a rain forest module,
- John Hays will teach “Spanish for the Traveler” for 12 hours Continuing Education Credit during the trip.
- Look for these courses in your spring registration bulletin. They are not required. They will enhance your travel experience. (These courses will be highlighted in a special section of the Spring Class Bulletin.)
5 scholarhips are available at $1000 each. To compete for the scholarhip a written compositon of 2 pages stating the student’s educational goals which relate to the three promises of TJC along with an official transcript and teacher reference is required. Travel Masters of Tyler is arranging a shuttle bus from Tyler to DFW where the Costa Rican Service/Travel Group will fly to Liberia, Costa Rica on May 10 and continue to their service project . However, it is only the first leg of the adventure. We will then - trek into the rainforest, travel through the forest on overhead, canopy level zip lines,
- hike up volcanoes,
- scuba or snorkel on one of many of the beautiful Costa Rican Pacific beaches and
- end our excursion discovering the museums and history of the capital of San Jos the day before departure back to the States.
