A partnership between TJC Corporate Services and the American Management Association. Since 1923, the business community has turned to AMA for the practical training and business tools needed to improve individual, organizational performance, and achieve bottom-line results. Today, AMA is a global not-for-profit, membership-based association that provides a full range of management development and educational services to individuals, companies and government agencies worldwide, including 486 of the Fortune 500 companies.
The basic requirements necessary to earn a Tyler Junior College/American Management Association Certificate of General Management are 10 Continuing Education Units. Course selection is comprised of one- and two-CEU courses. One CEU normally equals one day. Two CEU courses are two-day events.
Regular one CEU course offerings include:
- Coaching for Top Performance - A skill-building course designed to assist and equip present and future leaders to successfully develop their teams. After completion of this course the student should expect to be able to apply basic coaching skills (significance, time, coachability) on a daily basis. Explain the importance of documenting workplace performance and devise and implement a performance improvement plan.
- Managing Conflict - A course that shows you how to defuse conflicts before they create absenteeism, work slowdowns, low morale, high turnover, and poor work quality. Through a series of realistic scenarios and stimulating workbook activities, you’ll first learn to identify management practices and styles that encourage conflict.
- Taking Control with Time Management - Gain proven time management strategies to increase productivity and efficiency. Discover how to use effective systems for setting and achieving goals and reducing on-the-job stress.
Regular two CEU course offerings include:
- Building High Performance Teams - Focuses on the how-to keys of team-building from recruiting the right team members to truly empowering them with authority and responsibility for their decisions and performance. You’ll understand how to build trust, confidence, and group work skills, balancing and fine-tuning the team process as you go. Build and manage teams that live up to their promise of higher productivity and greater problem-solving ability. Maximize team productivity by encouraging group discussion and problem-solving. Overcome organizational, management and employee barriers to teamwork. Manage interpersonal conflicts among team members.
- Communication Skills for Managers - The ability to communicate clearly is the critical core competency for successful managers at all levels and in all industries. A course teaching skills to allow you to become a more effective manager by improving your reading, writing, speaking, and listening proficiency. You will learn to communicate clearly and correctly to avoid misunderstanding and get your message across. Overview of concepts and skills of leadership in the work setting; introduces the nature of leadership; situational theory, styles, and the evaluation of leadership performance.
- Leadership Skills for Managers - Managing in today’s dynamic, diverse workplace demands a new type of leadership. The new leaders must be visionaries, change agents, coaches, and empowerers. Leadership Skills for Managers outlines the skills necessary to fulfill this challenging, changing, and rewarding leadership role. A course where you’ll learn how to empower and motivate employees to peak performance by responding to employees’ human needs with sensitivity and flexibility; manage change in a positive, proactive way by clearly communicating your expectations, objectives, and goals for your group and its individuals. Overview of concepts and skills of leadership in the work setting; introduces the nature of leadership; situational theory, styles, and the evaluation of leadership performance.
- Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers - A course written expressly for non-specialists, it clearly explains how to understand financial and operational measures, prepare and utilize budgets, respond to inquiries about the dollars-and-cents consequences of actions taken by you or your department, and speak the jargon of finance with fluency and ease. After completion of this course the student will, among other things, know how to differentiate between finance and accounting, grasp accounting fundamentals such as debits, credits, and double-entry bookkeeping, analyze basic financial documents such as income statements and balance sheets, and use financial tools to manage performance more effectively.
