Academic Advising

Mission Statement:

The mission of Academic Advising at Tyler Junior College is to enable academic success by assisting students in developing an educational plan compatible with their life goals, identifying campus resources, and providing guidance toward academic self-responsibility and completion of their academic goal, whether it is upgrading skills, graduation or transfer.

All students new to Tyler Junior College are required to visit with an Academic Advisor after satisfying admissions requirements and placement testing if needed.

Students must meet with an academic advisor before attempting to register IF they: are new to TJC; are non-TSI complete or non-TSI exempt; are on scholastic probation; have less than a 2.0 GPA; or, need to change their major. New transfer students or those applying for graduation must also visit with an advisor. All other students are not required to see an advisor before registration. However, all students are welcome to see an advisor at any time.

Academic advisement includes interpretation of test scores, selection of a major field of study, course selection and interpretation of TJC course transferability. Academic advisors advise students pursuing majors offered by three schools: the School of Applied Studies, the School of Allied Health and Nursing and the School of University Studies.

Students are encouraged to identify a career interest or major interest and then consult the academic advisor assigned to the School which most closely represents that interest. Advisors see students on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Please contact the appropriate Academic Advising office by telephone to make an appointment with your Advisor as soon as you receive test scores.

Returning students with a selected major are advised by advisors within their declared major. These students should consult with their Academic Advisor well in advance of online registration to avoid possible advisement delays.
