Residency Requirements

TJC has three resident classifications, In-District, Out-of-District, and Non-Texas Resident (Out-of-State) that determine your tuition rate.

In-district, in-state and out-of-state residency is determined by using the guidelines published by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in “Rules and Regulations—Residence Status.”
  • In-District student: A Texas resident (or dependent) who physically resides (permanent residence) on property subject to ad valorem taxation by the Tyler Junior College District the required length of time (12 months).
  • Out-of-District student: A Texas resident who does not physically reside within the geographic boundaries of the Tyler Junior College District.

“Dependent” means an individual who is claimed as a dependent for federal income tax purposes by the individual’s parent or guardian at the time of registration and for the tax year preceding the year in which the individual registers.  Therefore, a dependent student’s residency status would determined by the permanent residence of the individual who is claiming the student.

“Resident” means “domicile.” “Resided in” means “domiciled in.”

“Legal place of residence” is defined as the place where you, your parents or
guardian live for the required length of time at the time of enrollment.

The TJC taxing district includes portions of Smith and Van Zandt Counties.  If your domicile resides within this tax district, you may be eligible to pay the In-District tuition rate as described above.  You may check with the Smith County or Van Zandt County Appraisal Districts to check to see if your domicile is subject to the ad valorem taxation by the Tyler Junior College District.
Please note that simply changing your address with the school will not automatically change your residency status.  Please contact the Admissions office to change your residency status.
